My planner reminds me to visit parents place for the town fiesta in Minglanilla today. I planned an evening trip to get rid of the heavy traffic going to the place. I believe it’s not only a mere town fiesta but also for Catholics in the town, it is the fiesta of the Immaculate Heart of Mary which is the patroness of the town. I saw lots of a week long fun activities in their schedule for this fiesta in the net but no one gives me a result of schedule for their masses. Well, sometimes people tend to enjoy much and eat much in a fiesta but forget to drop by their parish and hear Holy Mass as thanksgiving.

Well, what is this occasion that we call ‘Fiesta’ anyway? According to the FreeDictionary.com, it is an “occasion on which people can assemble for social interaction and entertainments…” Each country around the globe has different way of celebrating this occasion, Mexico and Philippines is very popular for this kind of event… even Filipino community around the world celebrates their own fiestas to feel the fun and celebration of their country, if not they fly home from the United States just to celebrate. It is a whole day of fun games, people dancing to the music, parades, pageants, entertainment and a lot more of fun activities… and of course abundant food is never absent… lots and lots of foods in every house is one of the highlights in every homes to complete their fiesta.

The picture of a fiesta that first captured in my mind when I was still a little kid was endless of visitors coming in and out of our house starting from lunch time to supper time… and foods in our tables were very abundant to accommodate people who come to eat… that sometimes I even don’t know who and where they come from, haha..

Happy Fiesta!

Ninoy Aquino Day

August 21st, 2009

Occasion: Commemoration of the death of Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino, Jr.
Holiday Date: August 21
Official Status: Special Non-working Holiday
Why we celebrate this occasion? Ninoy’s heroic act to the Philippines

Yes, It’s a special non-working holiday today and occasions like this gives me an opportunity to bond with my family and spend quality time together at home… also a time for myself. Today I feel so relaxed and I tried not to look at my planner so I will be more focused on house keeping and not on upcoming busy schedules. I found time to browse the whole house this morning especially those corners that I seldom got an opportunity to go during my busy working days. One of my favorite place in our house is the rooftop, it’s over looking the neighborhood and sitting here makes me so relaxed, oh! how wonderful it is to find time to pause and keep the silence…

Well, we owe thanks for the rest day we are enjoying now to our heroes especially to Ninoy whom Filipino people are commemorating today… :)

Corazon Aquino

August 1st, 2009

corazon_aquinoFirst President of the Fifth Republic of the Philippines and first woman president of the Philippines , Mrs. Cory Aquino, died today at the age of 76 after a battle with colon cancer. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo decalared a 10-day national mourning period, for the Philippines.

Aquino uplifts democracy in the Philippines when she transitioned power from a blodless “People Power” revolt led by former President Marcos. I admire President Aquino for her courage to lead the Filipino people in restoring democracy at a time of great peril in the country. This occasion of mourning period for a loss of a great president is also a way to retreat and remember all the great things she contributed to Philippine history.

Yahoo news summarizes President Aquino’s liife, see link here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/as_obit_corazon_aquino

Independence Day in the Philippines

I see Philippine Flag waving everywhere, inside the offices, schools, big establishments, in streets and even hanging in each car. And it reminds me of the Philippine Independence which is celebrated every 12th of June. In order to observe the importance of this occasion, the government declared this as a legal holiday which means, generally no work and no classes are held this day. Thanks to my history lesson, I learned to value this day as one of the special occasion in the country. I remember when my history teacher presented in class different story of how different countries acquire their Independence, the whole class was so attentive and many questions were raised and from that point I learned to appreciate this occasion.

Independence is one of the beautiful words for me, the sound of freedom and self determination makes individual strong and alive. It’s so wonderful to be free! It’s a broad and extensive expression, and we can relate and share a lot of things about it.

I am free, you are free, we can do anything we want as long as we know our limitations. How to celebrate Independence Day is up to each of us because it doesn’t only stop from history of how the country acquired it but also means the individual freedom to make our country a better place to live in.

Happy Independence Day Philippines! Mabuhay!

Boxing – The main event

May 3rd, 2009

It’s time to watch boxing for a Pacman-Hitman fight for millions of people worldwide while I choose to watch “X-men Origins-Wolverine” movie in Ayala. It’s not that I don’t like to watch Manny Pacquiao fight Ricky Hatton but to watch Hugh Jackman just excites me the more. I’m also worried to see what will be the outcome of the fight after I read many reviews that Hatton has the bigger chances to win the fight…

But luckily, I’m so happy that Manny Pacquiao makes the Filipino people proud again! This is the occasion where the Philippines embrace significant world victory once more. I marked this occasion as significant because in Cebu alone, newspapers claimed that they hit zero crime rate during the duration of the fight, isn’t that fantastic? I am not a big boxing fun, my hubby and dad is… but because of this incredible prowess in the ring that Manny Pacquiao shows and for his being influential and a peace-magnet even for a short time, it just makes me convinced that this man is worthy to be called the ‘Pambansang Kamao’ in Filipino.

I remember one occasion 6 years ago where our family gathered completely in our living room lead by my father and watched, cheered, shout and jumped with joy during one of Manny Pacquiao’s fight… that’s the occasion where I first saw Pacman in the ring and learned how exciting boxing is.

For this, Congratulations Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao! More Power!

The most colorful Religious Occasion – Sinulog 2009

January 18th, 2009

Cebu City is once again in a very festive mood celebrating the very colorful and fun occasion of the month – the Sinulog 2009! I may not be in the streets watching closely the parade of dancers but I enjoyed going to the mall with my family. Different statue of the baby Jesus is displayed in the mall where it is so calm to look at. I also celebrate it by going to Holy Mass in the Basilica of Sto. Niño where I am so amazed with how heavy the traffic of people inside and outside the basilica and even if the rain falls and people are becoming wet they are still devotedly praying… while I am a little disturbed.

Why Sinulog in Cebu City is so famous around the world? For me, it’s because of the stunning talent the Cebuanos showed, dancing to the Sinulog beat and offered it to baby Jesus. The creativity of every participant makes the festival brighter and colorful. The Sinulog occasion traditionally lasts for nine days and the grand Sinulog parade is usually in the last final day of the celebration. Many wanted to complete the novena Mass in honor of Santo Nino so their prayers will be granted and I heard many stories about answered prayers.
Crowd of devotees
The fireworks display of this year’s Sinulog in Ayala Mall is fabulous that even my little 1 year old girl shows an amazing expression. For me it’s the best Sinulog I ever had. Looking forward for another new experience of Sinulog in the coming years.
